FTP Patch Cords

What are FTP Patch Cords?

FTP (Foiled Twisted Pair) patch cords are specialized cables used in computer networks, featuring shielding to protect signals from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI). In the case of FTP cables, the shielding is a layer of aluminum foil that wraps around the conductors. FTP patch cords are popular in networks where there is a high level of electromagnetic interference, such as industrial, medical, or laboratory environments.

Types of FTP Patch Cords

There are several types of FTP patch cords that differ in the type of conductors and the amount and type of shielding. The most commonly used in networks are single-pair or multi-pair foil-shielded patch cords. Both types can provide effective protection against electromagnetic interference. In the case of single-pair patch cords, the foil shield covers only one conductor, while in multi-pair patch cords, the shield covers each conductor individually.

Throughput of FTP Patch Cords

The throughput of FTP patch cords depends on the quality of their construction and the materials used. In FTP patch cords where aluminum foil is used as shielding, throughput may be lower compared to unshielded patch cords. Therefore, it is important to choose high-quality patch cords made from materials that ensure a stable and fast connection in the network.

Shielding of FTP Patch Cords

FTP patch cords are characterized by a high degree of shielding, meaning they can effectively protect transmitted signals from electromagnetic and radio frequency interference. In the case of FTP patch cords, foil shielding provides protection in the frequency range of up to approximately 100 MHz. It's worth noting that the higher the frequency, the greater the chance of interference. Therefore, for demanding applications, considering patch cords with more advanced shielding, such as braided shielding, which can provide protection in the frequency range of several gigahertz, may be advisable.
