Cloud Router Switch (CRS)

The MikroTik CRS (Cloud Router Switch) series comprises network devices that combine the functions of a traditional layer 2 switch with the capabilities of a layer 3 router. They stand out from other similar devices due to their ability to handle both port switching and data routing functions.

In comparison to standard switches, CRS devices are more advanced, offering additional features typical of routers. They can manage network traffic, filter IP addresses, and handle routing functions between subnets. Additionally, they can support VLANs, allowing the segmentation of the physical network into logical segments.

The key difference between CRS and traditional switches is their ability to perform routing functions. This capability allows them to act as central management devices for larger-scale networks where both switching and routing functions are required. In the case of other switches, routing functions are typically limited or entirely absent.

MikroTik CRS devices, besides standard port switching functions, also offer the ability to manage optical links, support Power over Ethernet (PoE), or even include built-in Wi-Fi access points, making them versatile solutions for various networking needs.

Diverse Applications and Functions of CRS

MikroTik CRS devices are layer 2 and layer 3 switches with built-in routing capabilities. Here are a few models from the CRS series and their typical applications:

  1. MikroTik CRS326-24G-2S+RM: This model features 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 2 SFP+ ports (10 Gbps). Application: used in small and medium-sized enterprises as a primary switch for wired and optical connections.

  2. MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+IN: It includes 4 SFP+ ports (10 Gbps) and 1 Gigabit Ethernet port. Application: ideal as a switch for connecting various devices requiring higher throughput, such as servers or storage devices.

  3. MikroTik CRS328-24P-4S+RM: It has 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports with PoE support and 4 SFP+ ports (10 Gbps). Application: perfect for installations requiring power supply to devices (IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points) via Ethernet cable.

  4. MikroTik CRS312-4C+8XG-RM: This model offers 8 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 4 Combo ports (SFP+/RJ45). Application: useful in networks requiring high transmission speeds, such as data centers or corporate networks.

  5. MikroTik CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN: It has 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 1 SFP port, and a built-in 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi access point. Application: ideal for small offices where both wired and wireless connections are needed in one device.

  6. MikroTik CRS317-1G-16S+RM: Featuring 16 SFP+ ports (10 Gbps) and 1 Gigabit Ethernet port. Application: used in environments where high-speed optical links dominate, e.g., data centers, ISP networks.

Common features in these devices include:

  • Layer 2 and 3 management capability.
  • VLAN and routing support.
  • PoE (in some models).
  • Support for SFP/SFP+ optical links.
  • Often equipped with the RouterOS operating system, offering a wide range of configuration and network monitoring features.

MikroTik CRS devices find applications in various scenarios, from simple office networks to advanced data center environments, providing flexibility, performance, and a wide array of configuration options for network management.
